so spotify is here in the U.S. so far as a fan, i kind of love it. as a musician, i don’t think i’ll make much money off the service, but it’s better than getting tunes stolen all day - at least i’ll get something. being able to put together playlists and have them offline on my phone/etc. for $10/month is incredible - not being reliant on a good wifi connection ultimately makes it no different than itunes, except this is a monthly fee. i’ve already saved money this month on music.
here’s my first spotify playlist. i call it “MTV 120 Minutes Old School.” mostly late 80’s, mostly upbeat end of things - when sinead was a badass, xtc and the jesus and mary chain rose to greatness, and about everyone i listened to had a british accent :) the tracks:
Sinead O’Connor – Mandinka / The Cure – In Between Days - Remastered LP Version / World Party – Way Down Now / Sonic Youth – Kool Thing / The Church – Under The Milky Way / Julian Cope – World Shut Your Mouth / Bob Mould – See A Little Light / The Psychedelic Furs – Heartbreak Beat / Pixies – Here Comes Your Man / Camper Van Beethoven – Eye Of Fatima (Pt. 1) / The Lemonheads – It’s A Shame About Ray / The Jesus And Mary Chain – Head On / The Plimsouls – A Million Miles Away / The Stone Roses – Fools Gold / Fine Young Cannibals – She Drives Me Crazy / The Primitives – Crash / Morrissey – Suedehead / XTC – Dear God / They Might Be Giants – Ana Ng / Smashing Pumpkins – Rhinoceros / The Mission UK – Wasteland / The Sugarcubes – Hit / R.E.M. – Pretty Pursuasion / Jane’s Addiction – Mountain Song / XTC – Mayor Of Simpleton
another reason i like spotify is the connectivity via facebook. you can see your friends’ playlists (at least the ones they choose to show online), and in an absence of good radio these days, it’s a pretty great way to hear new stuff from people with similar tastes.
